Why do they do this

Elephants sometimes need to replenish their digestive bacteria (which they can only get by eating other elephants' poop) and some elephants are too impatient to wait for the other elephant to poop it out first.

Also they don't fully digest all their food the first time around, so eating the poop can still give them nutrients from the undigested food.
