the insatiable appetite of people online to cancel and vilify

ethel cain, american singer, had a tumblr blog where she would reblog posts that had a particular redneck aesthetic that she likes. one time she reblogged a post where a confederate flag was visible in the background. it wasn't the focus of the photo and was easy to have skipped over, especially since she reblogged multiple things and probably didn't scrutinize each photo. people called her out, and as soon as she got up the next day and saw it, she deleted her reblog and apologized sincerely and stated that she was responsible for not vetting the photo closely enough, and would make more effort in the future. and she never did, no other incidents like that occured. and yet some people still use this tiny, minor incident to paint her as an irredeemable racist. people online will dig up things that a celebrity did as a literal teenager and use them as ammo. no one can make a mistake, grow up, and move on. if you do one bad thing, you're a bad person forever. no matter what.
