yes, i have heard the term 'dry drunk' used to describe people like that. your uncle sounds like the exact definition of that term. it's someone who still has a lot of the self destructive behavior that addicts have, but they aren't drinking or using anymore. they simply haven't matured or grown past the self destructive activities

I've just spent over half an hour reading about this, and YES! This is exactly what he is. Thank you. It's nice to know that he's not a unique asshole, and that other people have dealt with this same thing. I didn't mention it in my first comment, but the victimization - YES. He is ALWAYS the victim in every situation. Any time something goes wrong for him, it's NEVER his fault. Somebody else is always responsible. If he gets stopped by a cop, it's because the cop had it out for him, not because he was speeding. If he loses a job, it's because the boss unfairly targeted him, not because he called in with little notice repeatedly. If he gets evicted, it's because the landlord is doing something illegal, not because he didn't pay rent. Etc etc. It is exhausting.
