My (35M) wife (35F) and I found out that our baby would have Down syndrome. Apparently the tests are more than 90 percent accurate or something.

To say I was crushed is an understatement. My wife and I have been married 11 years yet even though I was ready at 24 and was willing to compromise by waiting 3 to 4 years she insisted on waiting until we were 31 and she had gotten promoted to start trying.

We tried for 3 years before the miracle baby happened. Except it's not going to be some miracle- the baby's life was going to be a nightmare for itself as well as for his or her parents.

Funny thing is I grew up Southern Baptist ( born in Mississippi) and I am still very involved with the Southern Baptist community here in Nevada where my wife and I have lived for our entire marriage.

Between the two of us, my wife is actually the one who was very much pro choice. Yet I thought about abortion and I thought regardless of religious implications, I'd choose it if the child was disabled. When it would probably be bullied, need years of expensive medical care and other developmental assistance, and require that one or both parents sideline their careers to take care of him/ her.

After the diagnosis my wife grieved but then got out of bed and said the child would be loved, and we would make it work. She told me her plan to either go part time or even take a much lower paying job, to read all the books, find all the support groups and resources, get a therapist.

This turned into a fight as I begged her to get an abortion.What made it worse is that my parents are devout Southern Baptists but somehow think that disability is deserved and began avoiding us. My community would shun me if they knew I pushed abortion yet I still made a rational decision. Yet my wife who had said she understood why people aborted disabled babies refused to do so.

I begged for days on end but she refused, instead throwing herself into support groups and doctor's visits. I couldn't take it anymore so I moved out and we've been two households for 1.5 months. She kept begging me to be there for her but I have communicated but she won't listen. Now the baby is coming and I've accepted I'm a dad now.

But I felt like my choice was robbed and in doing that, she violated the sanctity of our marriage. It stopped being about me even a little bit- this was about her.

Therefore I've been seeing a lawyer ( and a therapist.) However the therapist even says that I could file for divorce and maybe I should, but one day that child, disabled or not, will feel the impact of how their dad handled his/ her condition.

I wish all the best to both my wife and child. I will love the child, but my mental health needs me to love them from afar. I will pay child support, be there for holidays and birthdays, yell at school adminsitration if he/ she is being bullied. But I think I've made my decision about being unable to be in this marriage and under the same roof because my autonomy has been violated. AITA?
