I have a strong theory, and it takes a lot of phycology concepts to explain properly.

First, let's look at the age range that takes the cake when it comes to Original Characters. It's a specific age range, one preoccupied with identity. Yup, 12–24. So broad! I hear you say. It's the period of time between puberty, and the time our brain finishes developing. So much stuff is happening in the human body and mind at this time, countless books have been written on the subject. These guys are the number one source of OCs.

The trolls would have us believe their is a difference, but there's not. By their definition authors like Steven King are obsessed with OCs too. It's tired pathetic bait by people leading sad uncreative lives.
