LJ SimSecret Archive

Hello everyone!
This is just a quick FAQ to let everyone know what's going on

>Why are we creating a backup?

So, as you might be aware, there is a war happening with Russia as of March 2022.

If you're reading this in the far future you might wonder... What does that have to do with a secrets community about The Sims? Well, LJ (where we were originally hosted since 2007) is based in Russia. Due to sanctions that have put in place against Russia that means that LiveJournal is potentially at risk.

Total bummer, I know.

While I don't know what the future holds, I've heard rumblings that Russia may be cutting ties with the global internet. Whether that is true, I have no idea. What I do know is we honestly have desperately needed a backup for some time now. Which leads us here, to DreamWidth. While SimSecret isn't as popular as it once was (we still pull pretty impressive numbers for a community hosted on a site that isn't Tumblr though!) It's worth having a archive of the community's history. That's what this post is for.

Unfortunately, by the time we'd decided to move, LiveJournal had been blocking DreamWidth from importing posts and comments from its servers. That means that we have to do that work of archiving ourselves.

Again, such a bummer.

The good news is that we do have ways of backing things up. Using archive.org, we have an incomplete backup of the blog. Due to the way that LJ is set up (and policies that the official bots follow when crawling) a lot of stuff is missing from the wayback archive.

So, I've used HTTrack to crawl the blog myself. This will allow me to rehost the past webpages
as a static site AND allow you to download the entire blog from 2007-2022.

I'm still in the process of doing the work so I'll be editing this post as time goes on with where
I've hosted the archive, individual posts, etc.

When the archive is ready, I'll be posting it here. Thank you!
