so anyway rabies doesn’t ACTUALLY cause LITERAL hydrophobia. as in, fear of water in and of itself. but what rabies does is cause extremely painful spasms in the throat that makes it impossible to swallow, and it hurts so bad that the sufferer does not want anything to do with liquid and freaks out at the sight of it because liquid = pain. indeed, if you consider a “phobia” to be an irrational fear of something, the fear of water in this case is quite rational, and isn’t a “phobia” at all!

now, here’s the interesting part: WHY this happens. viruses are, by nature, parasitic. a virus can’t survive in a dead body! it needs living cells to replicate on, you see? that’s why they spread, it’s so they can hop from one host to another. pretty nasty stuff. rabies primarily spreads via saliva, which is why rabid animals froth at the mouth. the virus blocks the sufferer’s ability to swallow because, if they could swallow down that spit, it could kill the virus and we CAN’T have that. so it prevents swallowing and makes the sufferer extremely thirsty in the process, causing them to salivate more, and their need for hydration causes them to go even more mad and more likely to lash out and bite.

incidentally, human to human rabies cases have only ever been documented in organ transplants, when an unknowingly infected organ is transplanted elsewhere. do recall that rabies spreads via the nervous system and can take literal years to hit the brain and develop symptoms. human to human contact via saliva has never happened. theoretically, rabies could spread via sex as the virus is present in semen and vaginal secretion, but obviously this is unlikely to ever happen.

001. Sims 4 continues being boring :( and my sims 3 won’t load even without mods. Sims 2 is the best but I want to play sims 3 sometimes.
